Summary
The n0n ransomware group carries out large-scale extortion campaigns using AI-assisted tooling to automate script creation and attack workflows. The group primarily focuses on data exfiltration and, in some incidents, destructive data wiping instead of traditional file encryption. Its operations have expanded rapidly, targeting numerous organizations across multiple industries worldwide.
Investigation
The SOCRadar Threat Research Unit uncovered an exposed staging server at 185.157.161.148 containing the operator’s active workspace. The exposure revealed hundreds of attack scripts, source code, and evidence of substantial LLM API spending used to operate an AI coding agent. Researchers also mapped the group’s segmented infrastructure, including C2 panels, loot storage, and leak site backends.
Mitigation
Organizations should enforce phishing-resistant MFA across all remote access services and restrict firewall management interfaces using IP allow-lists. Maintaining immutable or air-gapped backups is critical for protecting against destructive activity and shadow copy deletion. Defenders should also monitor for high-volume cloud storage deletions and unusual administrative behavior.
Response
When n0n activity is detected, security teams should immediately invalidate compromised credentials and rotate affected cloud IAM keys. Review EDR and CloudTrail telemetry for patterns of mass object deletion or suspicious SSM command execution. Organizations should also reassess network segmentation to prevent lateral movement through RDP or WinRM.

Simulation Execution
-
Attack Narrative & Commands: The adversary has obtained valid AWS credentials through a combination of credential harvesting and session hijacking. To maximize extortion leverage, the attacker first enumerates all available storage assets via
ListBuckets. Once a high-value bucket is identified, the attacker begins a rapid sequence ofGetObjectcalls to exfiltrate sensitive data to an external endpoint. Finally, to prevent the victim from using native backups or recovery tools, the attacker executes a mass deletion of the bucket contents usingDeleteObjects, effectively performing a “scorched earth” data destruction attack. -
