Summary

Security researcher Chaotic Eclipse released FalconFlank, a zero-day privilege escalation exploit targeting the CrowdStrike Falcon sensor through abuse of malicious macro remediation. The vulnerability can allow attackers to gain elevated privileges on Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025. The researcher also disclosed ShieldBreak, a Microsoft Defender zero-day tracked as CVE-2026-69414 that enables arbitrary code execution with SYSTEM privileges.

Investigation

The report describes several local privilege escalation (LPE) vulnerabilities discovered by the same researcher. Analysis of ShieldBreak uncovered a complex exploitation chain involving Cloud Files, Object Manager namespace manipulation, and a timing race within the remediation process. The researcher also demonstrated HardBreacher, a flaw affecting Kaspersky endpoint security that enables takeover of a privileged UI process.

Mitigation

For FalconFlank, defenders may need to review exclusions and update detection logic to identify obfuscated DLL loading techniques. For Microsoft Defender, no patch is currently available because the issue remains a zero-day. Organizations should also monitor for suspicious or unauthorized DLL writes targeting sensitive Windows system directories.

Response

If unauthorized DLL creation is detected in C:\Windows\System32, incident responders should immediately isolate the affected host. Teams should audit recent macro-related activity and investigate unusual Windows Error Reporting tasks or unexpected file writes within protected system folders. Privilege escalation attempts originating from endpoint security processes should also be treated as high-priority activity.
